Air conditioning, heater cores and rear-differential noise

Air conditioning is a persistent weak spot: 230SLs never had it from the factory (units were dealer-installed or aftermarket) and even fitted systems often work poorly. Heater cores are labor-intensive to replace, and differential whine, especially on 230SLs and worse when cold, is a commonly flagged wear item, with sorting an old car reported to run into five figures.
