Naming and the 1994 facelift: 300CE became E320

Marque experts clarify the naming: the A124 was sold as '300CE' in 1993, then 'E320' for 1994-1995 when Mercedes flipped to letter-first designations — but all carried the 3.2L engine despite the misleading '300CE' badge. 1994 also brought a facelift (grille inset into the hood, revised lights, cabin filter added, revised rear fascia), making 1993 visually distinct.
