The Euro import arbitrage

Volkswagen GTI (Mk1) · value-and-market

Euro-spec Mk1s are more highly regarded in Europe than the US, and European pricing repeatedly anchored these auctions: commenters cited 15,000-20,000 euros for preserved cars in the late 2010s rising to a claim that nothing clean sells under 40k euros by 2021. Against that, US hammer prices of $15,000-$27,250 for imported Euro cars were called steals, and repeat importers walked bidders through the mechanics: cars over 25 years old are EPA/DOT exempt, container shipping is strongly preferred over RoRo, and a foreign title plus customs paperwork registers like a domestic purchase.
