The 1953-1962 'Ponton' range (180/190/219/220/220S sedans and the hand-built 220S/220SE coupes and cabriolets) is treated by the BringATrailer community as Mercedes-Benz at the peak of its post-war build quality: quiet, solid, dignified cars that will cruise comfortably at 65-70 mph and, by many first-hand German accounts, hold 100 mph on the autobahn. Engines are regarded as durable (valve guides being the one routine wear item around 100,000 miles) while the recurring cost centers are rust, the six-wheel-cylinder drum brakes, finicky Solex carburetors, and worn column-shift linkage.

“You will find yourself at many a red light wondering if the engine is still running, pushing the starter button and being embarrassed because it was idling so smoothly”Puchwagerl · Apr 18, 2023 at 3:11 PM
