Mercedes-Benz SL (R129)

The R129 SL (1990-2002) is regarded by the BaT community as an over-engineered, Bruno Sacco-designed roadster from the era 'when Mercedes engineers were in charge, not the bean counters,' spanning the M104 inline-six (300SL/SL320), M119 and later M113 V8s (500SL/SL500), and M120 V12 (600SL). The single dominant ownership issue is the power soft-top's fleaky hydraulic cylinders, universally described as the car's 'Achilles heel,' with rebuilt sets from TopHydraulics of Oregon being the accepted fix; the other recurring worry is the 1992-1995-ish 'biodegradable' engine wiring harness, which CIS/K-Jetronic cars (pre-92 and the 1992 500SL) escape entirely.

“Yes, the convertible top hydraulics are the Achilles heel of the R129 from 1990-2002.”Vander (The Seller) · Jul 7, 2025 at 2:07 PM
